Combat! was a highly-rated weekly one-hour series on ABC about a U.S. infantry squad fighting in France during World War II. It ran from 1962-1967, and was created by veteran combat infantryman Robert Pirosh who won an Oscar for writing the 1949 classic Battleground. Vic Morrow was a working, but relatively unknown, actor from New York with film and television credits when he was cast in the role that would make him an international star. Ironically, Combat! remained popular even as the Vietnam War had begun. Not only did Morrow's role last five seasons on ABC, but the show gave him the opportunity to direct a number of memorable episodes including the two-part "Hills are for Heroes," which the fans refer to as "Combat: The Motion Picture." Morrow's Saunders was a man of few words - much of the emotion was in his eyes and body language. He's a memorable character, recognized for his signature walk, his war-weariness, and his strong attachment to the other men in his squad, Littlejohn, Caje, Kirby, Doc and Lt. Hanley. ABC eventually canceled Combat! and replaced it briefly with Garrison's Gorillas, another World War II series that had a brief one season run.
