The "Miracle on Ice" refers to a medal-round game during the men's ice hockey tournament at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The hosting U.S. team and the defending gold medalists, Soviet Union team, played this game. The Soviet Union had won the gold medal in six of the seven previous Winter Games.

This semi final game against the Soviet Union was an exciting game from start to finish. The U.S. knew their opponent; they knew what it would take to win. In the final 10 minutes, it provided end to end action. The solid goal tending by Jim Craig kept the U.S. lead at one Goal. And then in the final moments of the game, Announcer Al Michael's delivered his famous ten second countdown call. With five seconds left, he asked the question. Do you believe in miracles? Yes, the young American team did. It had beaten the Soviet Union team.

Many people thought this was the gold medal game because of the celebrations and feelings of joy that were shown. But the U.S. still had to beat a strong Finland team. They did on Sunday to claim the gold medal. With millions of new hockey fans watching on live TV, the U.S. team came back once again and beat Finland 4-2 to claim the Gold medal. As the team celebrated on the ice, coach Herb Brooks quietly entered the locker room and cried tears of joy. He knew this was more than just a hockey game; this was a moment in world history.
