Some people get confused, mostly because there's no real science behind the concept of race. The US census says race equals black, white, asian, native america, alaskan, hawiaan or other. Hispanic is a classification related to shared descent and/or culture, ethnicity. It's in a separate category from race. There are black, white and probably even asian hispanics and quite a few native american hispanics. Why Italians aren't Hispanic is a mystery since the Italians (aka Romans) invented the word, ie, Hispania, which means Spain. Some people even try to tell us Spaniards aren't Hispanics. That's really crazy. Since many if not a majority of Hispanics, including many Mexicans, identify as white, it's odd to see people tell the Italians and Irish they can't be ethnically Irish or Italian because of their skin color/race. I chanced on this because I'm researching medals awarded to immigrants groups. If we're gonna be consistent about what an ethnic group is, ie, shared culture/descent, then anglo-saxons probably have the most awarded medals of honor. That's certainly the case for the Civil War where the most were awarded, anglo-saxons followed by the Irish and Germans. Only one medal was awarded to a Mexican in the Civil War and he was black and lived in upstate New York. I'd sure like to read his family's biography. In my research, I'm focusing on country where the medal of honor recipient was born and where his/her parents were born. That eliminates confusion about race and ethnicity. BTW: President Trump self-identities as a WASP.

As a group of people Mexican Americans have won the most medals of honor. Mexican Americans were represented at the time as a very small minority group within the branches of service. Irish American were considered white and were included within other whites. Thank you.

The term ethnic group is loaded. Ethnicity, nationality and race are not uniformly defined or even applied. Anybody who serves our country and wins a Medal of Honor is first of all an American. Such tallies and statistics only serve to distract us from their bravery, their dedication to country and their sacrifice to their fellow soldiers.

There are also numerous illegal immigrants who over stay there visa's from Europe and Asia - it's interesting how you neglect to mention those. In fact more illegal immigration happens through airports and over staying visas than occurs over our Southern border.

The answer is not correct, research again. The Medal of Honor was first commissioned by President Lincoln during the Civil War. Since that time there have been 3,487 recipients, including one woman. It is bestowed on those who display gallantry, intrepidity and heroism above and beyond the call of duty. 88 Medals of Honor have been bestowed on African-Americans, the first being awarded to William Carney, July 18, 1863, during the Civil War. 59 have been awarded to Hispanic-Americans, 33 to Asian-Americans, and 32 to Native-Americans.

I served in the Army, I did my job as required. Any man or woman that has received the MOH or a Silver Star or Bronze Star has deserved it. Sometimes being long overdue in receiving their awards. I salute to everyone that served !
