Descended from both Hungarian and Russian Jewish immigrants, Williams was born Anson William Heimlich on September 25, 1949, in Los Angeles, California. He is an American character actor and director; and he is best known for his role as Richie Cunningham's friend (and singer) Warren "Potsie" Weber on the television series Happy Days (1974–1984).

His father, Haskell Heimlich, legally changed the spelling of the family name to "Heimlick". His paternal uncle was Dr. Henry Heimlich (February 3, 1920 – December 17, 2016), inventor of the Heimlich maneuver, a commonly-known technique of abdominal thrusts used for stopping choking. Dr. Heimlich first published his views about this maneuver in the June 1974 issue of the monthly medical journal Emergency Medicine.
