This area of Northern California holds nine counties and is known as The Bay Area. It holds several cities, most popular, to name a few are San Francisco. Napa, and Alameda.

Since San Francisco is in, "The Bay Area" and situated on the San Francisco Bay, this is why it is known as, "The City by the Bay".

The Bay area is also known to be culturally diverse, housing many Hispanics, Asians, African Americans and Pacific Islanders. It also has a large Chinese population.

The earliest discovered presence of humans in the area dates back to 3000 BCE according to archeologists. The area was inhabited by the Ohlone people as discovered by a Spanish Exploration in 1769 led by Gaspar de Portolà, the first documented visit by Europeans.

San Francisco is also famous for its' landmarks such as The Golden Gate Bridge and Pier 39 with its many shops, restaurants and street performances. Fisherman's Wharf is known to have many seals congregate in the area and Pier 39 is part of the former much larger whole, Fisherman's Wharf. There are many things to see and do in The City by the Bay, San Francisco.
