Tests for Workability of Concrete - Workability of concrete mixture is measured by one of three methods:

a) Slump test

b) Compaction factor test

c) Vee-bee consistometer test

The last two tests (b, c) are laboratory tests while the first test (a) is the field test.

Concrete Slump Test - This test is carried out with a mold called a slump cone whose top diameter is 10cm, bottom diameter is 20 cm and height is 30 cm.

Fill with concrete sample to 1/3, plunge 5/16" rod 25x to mix, fill to 2/3, rod 25x, fill to top, rod 25x and skreet off level. Pull the cone and measure how far the concrete slumps or falls from skreeted level. Depending on design mix of that concrete it will fall hopefully within the acceptable values of design mix for that concrete. If it does, all is well. If not, the concrete may not perform as expected for compressive strength.
