In 1931 the film, Frankenstein, was made as an American horror monster film by Universal Pictures. It was directed by James Whale and adapted from the play by Peggy Webling (which in turn was based on the novel of the same name by Mary Shelley). This film is about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a monster, but his assistant accidentally gives the monster a murderer's brain.

In a European village, a young scientist, named Henry Frankenstein, and his assistant Fritz, a hunchback, piece together a human body. Frankenstein desires to create human life through electrical devices.

Victor Frankenstein is actually the title character of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. In her novel, the doctor's first name is Victor, while his best friend is Henry Clerval.

Only in the 1931 film is Dr. Frankenstein's first name Henry, while his best friend's name is Victor Moritz.
