Lincoln, Nebraska was originally founded as the village of Lancaster in 1856. It was built in the southeast section of the state of Nebraska approximately 60 miles southwest of Omaha which is the largest city in the state. Omaha is located on the Missouri River which is the eastern border of the state between Nebraska and Iowa.

Being on the Missouri River which was the major means of transportation and eventually a hub of the Union Pacific Railroad Omaha grew the fastest as that part of the country was developed but Lancaster was renamed Lincoln after the 16th president and was chosen in 1867 as the new state capitol.

Lincoln is home to the state and United States government and the state university. These have become the three largest employers in the city of Lincoln which has grown to a population of just over 277,000 in 2015. It is the 2nd largest city in Nebraska trailing only Omaha and is the 72nd largest city in the United States. The university has over 25,000 students enrolled.

The state capitol building shown here is the 2nd tallest state capitol building in the United States. The building was designed by Bertrand G Goodhue and was completed in 1936. Other sites of interest in the city would include Memorial Stadium, the university's football stadium, which seats around 90,000 and is consistently sold out for Nebraska home games.
