Although Edinburgh is the second largest city in Scotland after Glasgow it is the capital of the country. It had 507,107 inhabitants in 2016. It has a long history with settlements more than 1000 years old.The royal burgh was founded by King David I in the early 12th century on land belonging to the Crown, though the precise date is unknown.

It has an Old Town with the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyroodhouse Palace. Many old buildings are still standing along the streets like St Giles Cathedral.

The New Town was built starting in 1767 and has a lot of Georgian buildings.

Edinburgh has a Scottish Parliament since 1998 after a referendum in Scotland 1997.

Scotland has a rich history of science and engineering, with Edinburgh producing a number of famous names. John Napier, inventor of logarithms, was born in Merchiston Tower. James Clerk Maxwell,founder of the modern theory of electromagnetism, was born at 14 India Street.
