The first Iron Butt motorcycle rally was held in 1984 with only 10 riders. The first rally began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but it is not tied to that location. The next rally was held in 1991 under the management of the Iron Butt Association. The rally is now held every other year with the start and end locations changed for each event.

Entry into the rally is by lottery and only open to members of the Iron Butt Association. The rally last for 11 days, with many competitors riding more than 11,000 miles in total. This is an extreme event and in 2017 only 89 of the 107 entrants finished the rally. The Iron Butt Rally started in the U.S. but now there is a UK version called the Brit Butt Rally.
