The classic 1956 John Ford western "The Searchers" is about two westerners - ex-Confederate Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) and young half-breed Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter) who spend five years searching for Ethan's two nieces (Natalie Wood, Pippa Scott) who were kidnapped by Cheyenne Indian raiders. A subplot involves a budding romance between Pawley and Laurie Jorgensen (Vera Miles) the daughter of a neighbor. When Pawley's horse dies from exhaustion early in the story (when Martin fails to listen to Ethan about allowing his horse to rest before making the forty mile journey back to his family's endangered homestead), Laurie reluctantly offers him her own horse - Sweet Face. It's not that Laurie doesn't want to give him her horse, it's that she doesn't want him to leave in the first place. In trying to track down his half-sister, Martin has no idea how long he will be gone, and Laurie is just tired of waiting for him to settle down with her.
