Humphreys Peak (12,635') is the name of the highest point in Arizona. It is the tallest peak on San Francisco Mountain which is located just north of Flagstaff, Arizona. The peak is snow covered for about 5 months of the year and alpine vegetation is dominant above the tree-line. Every year many visitors attempt to reach the top of the well marked Humphreys Summit Trail which climbs 4.8 miles from the start of the trail at 9.200'. Some come unprepared for the harsh conditions above tree line while others find difficulty breathing in the low-oxygen mountain air; ultimately only the best prepared and most serious hikers make it to the top. The peak is named for Andrew A. Humphreys who was a topographical engineer, a Civil War General and was one of the incorporators of the National Academy of Sciences.
