It is a small boutique firm in Memphis, Tennessee specializing in accounting and tax law.

Mitch McDeere is an educated tax lawyer who has a certified public accountant credential. Here Cruise's McDeere has an inner fire, hard edge, and overweening ambition to be successful as a lawyer. Additionally he is the husband of Abby McDeere, a Western Kentucky University–educated elementary school teacher.

This character (persona) of Mitch was first effectively portrayed by Tom Cruise in the 1993 film adaptation of the novel. Next, Mitch was very well played by Josh Lucas in 2012 for Entertainment One Television's show also named The Firm.
