Located in Washington, DC this university has been educating deaf and hard of hearing students for over 150 years. It was established by an act of Congress in 1864, signed into legislation by President Abraham Lincoln. As a federally-chartered school, the university's diplomas are signed by the President of the United States.

The school is bi-lingual, with classes taught in both English and American Sign Language. Wherever you go on the campus, one can find ASL being used. Many of the instructors are deaf themselves, and even the university's president is a deaf woman.

Today Gallaudet University stands as a leader in the research and development of education for the deaf and hard of hearing - not only on the campus, but all over the world. Gallaudet's students come from all across the US, as well as over 25 different countries, and Gallaudet graduates often become leaders in educational programs as far away as Africa and Mongolia. The school maintains the largest collection of deaf research and literature to be found anywhere in the world.
