He is the founder of the Hare Krishna movement (ISKCON) which began in New York in 1966. Before he passed away in 1977, he established 108 temples worldwide. His followers are famous for wearing traditional Indian clothing, chanting the Hare Krishna mantra while playing drums and hand-cymbals in the streets of major cities around the world, and for distributing books of translations of ancient Vedic scriptures in many languages worldwide. His movement is famously known as the "Kitchen Religion" because it attracts people by its delicious cuisine.

Steve Jobs mentioned this in a famous speech that he gave while delivering the commencement address at Stanford University in 2005:"I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it.”
