August Ferdinand Möbius was a German mathematician and theoretical astronomer who lived between 1790 and 1868. Ten years before his death, he discovered the phenomenon of the Möbius strip, in 1858.

A Möbius strip is a continuous loop of material with a half twist and the ends joined or glued. If one was to draw a line in the centre and follow the length of the strip, the line would eventually come back to the starting point, thereby giving the impression of only one side.

There are various modern industrial uses for this strip: conveyor belts, so the band has even wear; continuous magnetic recording tape, as in an 8 track cassette; typewriter ribbon so a given length of ribbon is effectively doubled.
