The Island of Montreal is boomerang-shaped (one end pointing roughly west, the other roughly northeast). It is the largest island in the Hochelaga Archipelago, and the second largest in the Saint Lawrence River (following Anticosti Island in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence). It is the most populous island in Canada and the 37th most populous island on earth.

The island is approximately 50 km (31 miles)long and 16 km (9.9 miles) wide at its widest point. The island of Montreal has a shoreline of 266 km.

The island of Montreal is the major component of the territory of the city of Montreal. It has a population of 1,861,900 inhabitants (22% of the population of Quebec), It is also the 6th most populous island of the Americas, outranking Manhattan Island in New York City.

The crossings which connect the island to its surroundings are some of the busiest bridges in the country and the world. The Champlain Bridge and the Jacques Cartier Bridge together accommodate 101 million vehicles a year.

The island derived its name from Mount Royal, the 3 peaked mountain at its center and gradually spread its name to the town, which had originally been called Ville-Marie.
