In the 2001 film, The Fast and the Furious, Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker), a former officer in the Los Angeles Police Department and former agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, offers up his pink slip (car title) as an entry way into the quarter mile auto race with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). Dominic is a professional street racer and leader of a band of auto hijackers. To learn about the criminal group, Brian must first befriend Dominic. Thus the true start of their interaction is with Brian racing Dom and several other individuals.

During the race, Brian manages to beat one of the other racers, but overwhelms his 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse and almost loses control of his vehicle. When he arrives at the finish line, Brian boasts that he almost had Dominic, but the veteran racer believes and directly states that he is the winner. Ultimately the two men, Brian and Dom, become good friends after Brian subsequently saves Dom from getting arrested.

By the end of this film based upon the things that happen, Brian must choose between his obligation to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAP) or his keen friendship with Dom Toretto.
