What military legend was nicknamed "The Marble Man"?

Robert Edward Lee (January 19, 1807 – October 12, 1870) aka Bobby Lee, Uncle Robert, Marse Robert, Granny Lee, the King of Spades, the Old Man, and the Marble Man was an American general known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. The son of Revolutionary War officer Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, Lee was a top graduate of the United States Military Academy and an exceptional officer and military engineer in the United States Army for 32 years. During this time, he served throughout the United States, distinguished himself during the Mexican–American War, and served as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy.

From its installation in 1884 until its removal in 2017, the most prominent monument in New Orleans was a 60-foot (18 m)-tall monument to General Lee. A 16.5-foot (5.0 m) statue of Lee stood tall upon a towering column of white marble in the middle of Lee Circle. The statue of Lee, which weighs more than 7,000 pounds, faced the North. Lee Circle is situated along New Orleans' famous St. Charles Avenue. The statue of General Lee was removed on May 19, 2017, the last of four Confederate monuments in New Orleans to be taken down.

Robert E Lee opposed monuments, specifically Confederate war monuments. He wrote: “I think it wiser not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.” Lee believed countries that erased visible signs of civil war recovered from conflicts quicker. He was worried that by keeping these symbols alive, it would keep the divisions alive.

Joseph A. Robitaille, What it proves by removing symbols of an oppressive economic system is that we will mo longer glorify those who defended that oppression. Those statues represent a system based on slavery and place on pedestals, those who betrayed the USA by defending that system. Do you also think it would be appropriate to continue honoring Hitler by leaving up statues of him in Europe?

babafrby, By all means, let's teach our children to revere those who betrayed the United States of America by defending an oppressive economic system based on slavery and the subjugation of an entire race. How would you feel as a black person leaving in the South knowing so many still want to protect that way of life. We wont forget who these men were, but we dont have to glorify them.

Lee also became a traitor to the Union, AKA, the United States of America when he swore allegiance to the Confederacy, a nation formed because southerners stood for a horrific economic system based on an abomination called slavery. The stars and bars, a Confederate battle flag, mistakenly called the flag of the Confederacy also represents traitors to the union and the oppression of an entire race. Taking the flags down and removing statues is NOT erasing history. We will still remember the Civil War, but we will not glorify those who chose to be on the wrong side of history. We will not honor the symbols of a failed cult of bigotry. We will remove shrines to traitors and tyrants from pedestals, much the way statues of King George III were torn down during the American revolution. Why would we honor tyrants and oppressors? Tyrants and traitors do not belong on pedestals nor should their flags be honored by display. Even without statues of the king of England, we still remember who won the war and why it was fought. No history was erased or rewritten.

allen d lynda, You know nothing of Robert E. Lee, and have obviously never researched one word on this honorable, devout man. Here's a tidbit for you: He released his slaves in 1856 and referred to the institution of slavery as "abominable." He was highly respected by both sides. Don't just be a parrot. Take the time to learn FACTS for yourself. BTW, General Grant, commander of the Union forces, waited until well after the war was over before he released his slaves. Yes, there were slaves in the North as well. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed SOUTHERN slaves. If you will dig into Lincoln's life, you will learn he is not quite the paragon of virtue we have all been taught he was. FYI: I am 63, and a voracious reader.
