What model of Ford car was introduced in 1982 as a replacement for the Cortina?

The Ford Sierra is a mid-size car or large family car that was built by Ford Europe from 1982 to 1993. It was designed by Uwe Bahnsen, Robert Lutz and Patrick le Quément. The code used during development was "Project Toni" It was named for the Spanish word for mountain range.

The Ford Sierra was first unveiled on 22 September 1982 at the British International Motor Show hosted at the NEC in Birmingham. with sales beginning on 15 October 1982, replacing the Ford Cortina. Its aerodynamic styling was ahead of its time and as such, many conservative buyers (including company car drivers) did not take fondly to the Ford Cortina's replacement.

It was mainly manufactured in Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, although Sierras were also assembled in Ireland, Argentina, Venezuela, South Africa and New Zealand.

Why did Ford retire the Cortina?

The question did say Cortina replacement. I do recognize the car names (other than the Galaxy) as being foreign built imports like the Cortina. There was no need for Sierra and Mondeo to be here with Ford Taurus available at local dealerships. With demise of the Ford Pinto, I remember second generation Fiesta replacement around the early 1980's hence my wrong answer. Additionally, I thought Sierra was a General Motor label,

I think this question is patently unfair. As Ford is produced in the US, England and Germany, the answer could be a lot of different models. The question, in fairness, should have identified Ford UK. The new Taunus/Cortina used the doors and some panels from the 1970 Taunus. It was replaced in 1982 by the Ford Sierra. In Asia and Australasia, it was replaced by the Mazda 626-based Ford Telstar,
