Before Computer Generated Images (CGI) movies had to actually have the things they showed in various scenes. Modern movies can simply create huge crowd scenes with CGI but Gandhi was made before such luxuries. The funeral scene at the end of this magnificent movie was filmed on location using between 350,000-400,000 people. The film makers actually hired 3,000 extras and taught them to march in the manner the Indian military marched at the real funereal. Another 98,000 were hired for the more up-close scenes. The remainder were local people who volunteered to fill out the scenes in response to local advertisements. Many people wanted to be part of this epic undertaking as it was shot on Jan 31, 1981, the 33rd anniversary of the actual funeral of this great soul.

Over 20,000 feet of film was shot for just over 2 minutes of the final scene. More film was shot of the funeral than for the entire rest of the movie.

The movie was released to critical acclaim around the world, nominated for 11 Academy Awards, claiming 8 of them. It has been nominated for 36 other awards around the world and has won 22, coming in second place in 2 others. Words spoken at his funeral ring as true today as they did over 60 years ago.

"Mahatma Gandhi had become the spokesman for the conscience of mankind, a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empires."

"Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth."
