What New Zealand city was significantly damaged by earthquakes in 2011?

The city of Christchurch is regarded as "The Garden City" of New Zealand. Built on the Canterbury Plains and close to the Port of Lyttleton, the city was long renowned for its beauty. The destruction from the 2011 earthquake was devastating, only made much worse by the death toll of 185 and thousands of injured. Since the earthquake, the city has rebuilt and continues to do so - becoming a modern and very attractive place to visit.

A very beautiful city well worth viisting even while the rebuilding is going on. By the way the Port is spelled: "Lyttelton"

And everywhere there's carpark with a gravel surface, well, that used to be a building. Lyttelton was also affected by the quake. What a nice place it is, I really liked it there. We were on our way to Akaroa, a quaint place with a huge French influence, very different for NZ.

A beautiful city filled with friendly people. The first earthquake did damage but few causalities, the second one killed 185 people as it happened in the middle of a work day and an office building pancaked. New Zealand is a land of contrasts and is very beautiful.

Being a New Zealander I knew that. I cannot believe someone thought that the capital of Australia was in New Zealand. The Aussie would hate that. lol

ninakamwene, well I live here in Christchurch and that certainly isn't true even now, still a long way to go till we are fully operational. There are still people waiting on repairs to their homes to be done properly waiting on resolution to disputes with insurance companies, and still a massive building program taking place, especially in the central city, some things haven't even been started yet, almost a decade on from February 22nd 2011.
