During the 1920s, the playwright who won three Pulitzer prizes was Eugene O'Neill. O'Neill as a native New Yorker got his first Pulitzer win in 1920 at the age of 31. The Pulitzer committee had asked a jury of three to recommend the prize winner.

The jury recommended Eugene O’Neill "Beyond the Horizon" for the 1920 prize, and the Pulitzer committee gave it to him. For O’Neill, it was the first of three Pulitzer Prizes that he would obtain in the 1920s. The others came in 1922 for "Anna Christie" and in 1928 for "Strange Interlude". In 1957, O'Neill received a fourth Pulitzer for "Long Day’s Journey into Night".
