Nalcrest is an acronym for National Association of Letter Carriers Retirement, Education, Security and Training.

It was designed by and is operated by the Nalcrest Foundation, Inc., which is a branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the union which represents United States Postal Service city letter carriers.

Construction started in 1962, and the community was opened in 1963. Initially anyone could live there because of HUD regulations. But when the mortgage was paid off in 2002 membership was restricted.

Ironically, there is no home delivery of mail in Nalcrest. You must pick up your mail at the Post Office.

The town consists of 500 garden style, ground level apartments, a mixture of one bedroom and efficiency units. There are no pets allowed, and you must be able to take care of yourself. This is not an assisted living facility. Units are leased on a yearly basis, and all utilities, including community recreational facilities, are included except for electricity.

At one time you could only pay rent with a postal money order. However now checks and other forms of payment are accepted.
