What street in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1999 was erroneously called the longest street in the world?

Yonge Street which was formerly a part of King's Highway 11, received public claims by Guinness Book of World Records and others that it (Yonge Street) was the longest street in the world. Running from the shores of Lake Ontario, through central and northern Ontario, Canada to the Ontario-Minnesota border at Rainy River, together they are considered to be over 1,178 miles (1,896 kilometers) long. This claim rested on the tenuous claim that the length of the street was truly accurate (error-free).

Nonetheless, there are critics and experts that are skeptical about the popular claim/local legend. They state that Highway 11 and Yonge Street have never been one in the same, especially after the downloading of Highway 11 south of Barrie by the Harris government in the late 1990s.

Also it's a fact that in 1920 Yonge Street was then added to the Ontario provincial highway system as part of Highway 11. Next in 1937, Highway 11 added the Severn River-North Bay portion and the newly-completed North Bay-Hearst section.

So, had Yonge Street not morphed into Highway 11, continuing through towns, cottage lands, and wilderness for 1,178 miles (1,896 kilometers), it could have only claimed to be approximately 54 miles (86.9 kilometers) long. Without the changes in the roads near Barrie, any claim Yonge Street had to being the longest street in the world is false.
