On Oct. 13, 1971, Major League Baseball played its first World Series night game. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in Game Four of the Fall Classic at Three Rivers Stadium.

In 1972, two games were played at night.

NBC was the real culprit in moving the Fall Classic from sunlight to Klieg light. The network convinced MLB it would reach a larger television audience with night starts.

The promise of a larger TV audience was real. Sixty-one million people watched Game 4, which the Pirates won 4-3 to even the series two games apiece. No World Series game has been played in the day time since 1987...and that was played in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN.

In 1971, the Pirates went on to beat the Orioles in seven games with future Hall of Fame right fielder Roberto Clemente earning series MVP honors.
