The Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America, and it is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. In just 26 miles (43km), it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just cannot be beaten. This destination is the mysterious "Lost City of the Incas" which is Machu Picchu, Peru.

Machu Picchu is specifically an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it’s renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments and panoramic views.

Today, Machu Picchu is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. It is tangible evidence of the urban Inca Empire at the peak of its power and strength.
