Sony, in full Sony Corporation, is the major Japanese manufacturer of electronics products. It also was involved in films, music, and financial services, among other ventures.

In 1946, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the predecessor of Sony)
started as a small company with capital of just 190,000 yen - slightly more than $1,500 - and approximately 20 employees.
Founder Masaru Ibuka said the purpose of setting up the company was to "establish an ideal factory that stresses a spirit of freedom and open mindedness that will, through technology, contribute to Japanese culture."
Symbolizing Sony's spirit of challenge to "do what has never been done before," the company has continued to release countless "Japan's first" and "world's first" products.

Today the company is one of the leading manufacturers of electronic products for the consumer and professional markets. Sony was ranked 105th on the 2017 list of Fortune Global 500.

In the early 1960s, I had what was at the time a marvel of engineering & miniaturization: a Sony AM transistor radio. It was about the size of a pack of cigarettes & you could listen to it through a speaker or through a supplied earplug. With the earplug, I could listen to the local pop/rock station playing the Beatles & other British Invasion groups at night without my parents knowing I was awake!

I worked for his American counterpart who also helped establish SONY in America, but this was back in the early 80's on the Island of palm beach, he had ALOT of stories to tell, as they started this after WW2 ended, really interesting.

I am not sure but I have heard that the name Sony comes from "sonor" meaning sound. They Japanized it as a marketing thing and the Sony Walkman was a big hit that propelled the company to what it is.
