What US president founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis?
March of Dimes is a United States nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
The organization was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938, as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, to combat polio. The name "March of Dimes" was coined by Eddie Cantor. After funding Jonas Salk's polio vaccine, the organization expanded its focus to the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. In 2005, as preterm birth emerged as the leading cause of death for children worldwide, research and prevention of premature birth became the organization's primary focus.

Got it. Thanks to Roosevelt and Salk many of us escaped polio. May they RIP.

Until the vaccine we were not allowed to play outside in the h at of the day. Dr Salk truly saved so many lives from terrible results of polio. Had a friend who lived in an “iron lung”, a machine that kept his lungs moving air in and out. An other friend in braces on her legs to walk. God Bless the good doctor.

Brother in law had polio. Lived a long life. He fought hard to keep it from interfering with his life. He was a great guy with huge compassion for everyone.

Robin Burgess, I remember this very well too. I have a cousin who has lived with Polio all of his life. He is probably about 70 now.

I remember getting March of Dimes cards in elementary school with slots to insert dimes. We turned them when filled and received small plastic crutches.

I remember so well. A classmate came back after being out so long with polio. It was so nice to see her back and on her feet. Parents were afraid. But most of us escaped.

Robin Burgess, the vaccine is just that, a vaccine. The disease is in no way eliminated. Those who are not vaccinated stand a chance of getting polio. Shame on the parents who don't vaccinate their children.

My smallpox vaccine didn't leave a scar. Sugar cubes...great way to take vaccine for polio.

As a teenager we use to have March of Dimes drives. Asking shoppers for dimes to support the research, also took dimes to school for donating.

Small pox left a scar, polio via sugar cube didn't. So no BPlunkett Turner, it didn't leave a scar. I too remember going to the elementary school with my parents for the sugar cubes.

Robin Burgess, Yes it did leave about a 1/2 inch scar on the upper left arm and I still have mine, over 60 years later.

Everyone should know this! He was paralyzed from polio from a boy scout camp water fountain that set paralysis in hundreds of Scouts and he found the Warm Springs camp for the healing waters that gave relief to those stricken with the disease and he did a lot to further the cause and help for those stricken with Polio.

The Salk vaccine was an injected killed-virus vaccine that was developed in the 1950s. It was never designed to cause a scar as smallpox vaccine was. The Sabin vaccine was a live-virus oral vaccine that was begun about 1961 and was usually given as a pink liquid on a sugar cube. Polio virus attacks the CNS and gut so I can't imagine it causing a scar.

Robin Burgess, yes it did to many. I did not and not all of the vaccinated developed a scar. I remember thinking I had polio because I did not get a scab. Many scars developed because children would scratch and worry the scab. I’ve see some huge scars but mist were dime sized

Robin Burgess, I have small pox scar on my arm. Got the polio shot in elementary school but later my parents, younger brother, and I made those three trips to town (10+ miles each way) on Sunday afternoon to get those famous sugar cubes.
