But after they split up, Joel included ideas for lyrics in the song from his future wife supermodel Christie Brinkley. Brinkley and Joel remained married for nine years. She was the person who drew the cover art for his 1993 album "River of Dreams". They eventually separated due to Joel's busy work schedule.

This song was Joel's only #1 single in the UK in 1983. It was #1 in the UK for five weeks and was the second highest selling single for that year, right behind Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon”. It was also one of Joel's best selling in the US. This is one of the song that truly helped to make Joel a musical icon worldwide.

Spencer, in the same way ALL Western European powers did - especially the Spanish and the French; the Spanish purposefully destroyed the cultures of Sourh America. Have you ever read what the French did to Haiti? They have to take as much blame - possibly more - for the state of the country as the 2010 earthquake. Due to British narcissism. The only song most ever lived is about narcissism. The control tactics and issues they way Brits massacred hundreds of thousands on numerous continents is a shame AND EMBARRASSMENT. Joan Powers, Not sure I know what you mean ? snobby, narcissistic Brits ? Joel is quite popular here and tours here occasionally. The vast number of his appearances in America in recent years has much to do with it. He shared the stage with Elton John in 2010 if I recall ? a British musician of similar ilk. I think YOU are the inverted snob on display...we 'snobby Brits have pioneered many genres of music including 'punk'....which has no 'snobby' connotations whatsoever.
