Michael VII Doukas was an emperor of the Byzantine kingdom from 1071 to 1078. He levied unpopular taxes, let the army deteriorate, and allowed large parts of the Byzantine kingdom in Asia Minor to be conquered. Michael also allowed the currency to be devalued. For this crime he is known for eternity as Michael VII Doukas Parapinakēs (literal meaning Minus a Quarter).
