Joseph Vissarinovich Stalin (born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili (in Georgian), ( Ио́сиф Виссарио́нович Джугашви́ли (New Russian) and იოსებ ბესარიონის ძე ჯუღაშვილი (Old Georgian) born December 18, 1879, in Gori, Georgia/ died on March 5, 1953 in Moscow) was a Russian Dictator and radical reformer who ruled the Soviet Union from 1924 (after Lenin's death) with an iron fist until 1953.

He was a revolutionist who was arrested several times by the Tsar's Secret Police, dating from 1902 and was marked as a criminal for plotting and carrying out a bank robbery netting $3.2 million US Dollars. It was during this time before the Revolution that he changed his name to "Stalin...'man of steel' ".

He is credited with reforming the agrarian policies of Russia to increase efficiency, as well as modernizing Russia's industry, and thwarting Hitler's advance east.

He is also credited with a reign of terror from the time of his rise until his death, creating the Gulags, summary executions, expanding the Soviet Secret Police, and many other atrocities.

After his death, Nikita Khrushchev purged Russia of many memorials, and renamed Stalingrad, the sight of WWII's deadliest battle, as Volgograd.
