The USS Missouri - BB-63, was ordered 12 June 1940, the last battleship to be commissioned on 11 June 1944. Nicknamed the "Mighty Mo" or "Big Mo". The third battleship named after the state of Missouri.

In the Pacific Theater of WWII, she fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She shelled the Japanese home islands. Best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan, which ended WWII.

Also, the Missouri fought in the Korean War from 1950 - 1953.

She was decommissioned in 1955 into the U.S Navy reserve fleets. Then reactivated and modernized in 1984 as part of the 600 ship Navy plan. The Missouri provided fire support during Operation Desert Storm in January - February 1991.

The Missouri received a total of 11 battle stars for her service in WWII, Korean War and the Persian Gulf.

The Missouri was again decommissioned on 31 March 1992, she remained on the Naval Vessel Register until January 1995. She's donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association and became a museum ship at Pearl Harbor. Her hull faces the USS Arizona, as if she's guarding the final resting place of the entombed men.

P.S. The picture is not of the USS Missouri. And the ships were referred to as 'she', in the military.
