What was the first movie shot in Hollywood, California?

'In Old California' is a silent movie filmed in 1910. It was the first movie shot in Hollywood, California. It was directed by D. W. Griffith of the Biograph Company (then based in New York, New York). The film is a melodrama about the Mexican era of California.

Director D.W. Griffith discovered the little village of Hollywood on his trips to California and decided to shoot there because of the beautiful scenery and friendly people. On May 6, 2004 a monument was erected at 1713 Vine Street, just north of Hollywood Boulevard. The monument was made by Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and the film which was once thought lost was screened at the Beverly Hills Film Festival. This was the first time the movie had been seen by the public in 94 years. The film was scheduled for restoration, with the restored version to be premiered at a later date.

Good name for first CA film.

Jim Adams, I'm a 58 year old native Californian by birth, though I live in Prescott AZ now. I was not even aware of this movie, or that it was the first movie shot in Hollywood. And I lived in Orange County, the county south of Los Angeles. So...I'm very familiar with Hollywood. But somehow, this piece of Hollywood trivia escaped me. And even after using my 50/50, I still chose the wrong answer. Because I just did not know it, in spite of being a proud native Californian. One who spends way too much time defending her, and her residents, from all the liberal hating, gay-bashing, women-hating, Hollywood loathing asshats that seem to spew their most violent, virulent hatred here on Quizz Club in the comments section. And the charmers who want the state to fall into the ocean, I suspect, because they are afraid that liberalism, and homosexuality, are diseases, and they are terrified of catching either if they go anywhere near the state, let alone put one foot over the border into the state. Nothing is quite so sad to me as the sound of so many small minds slamming shut. They are entitled to those close minded opinions, but I don't have to like them.

The Hollywood ranch belonged to my distant relative, Harvey Wilcox. His widow later deeded it to Los Angeles. Hollywood gets its name from that ranch.
