"Hey Jude" was released in August 1968 as the first single from the Beatles record label, Apple Records. At more than seven minutes in length it was at the time the longest single to top both the British and American charts. In the US it spent nine weeks at number one and tied the record for any Beatles single to stay at the top of the US charts. "Hey Jude" sold over 10 million copies alone in the US and is argubly considered by many music critics to be one of the greatest songs of all time.

"Hey Jude" was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon and McCartney. It was originally titled "Hey Jules" and was written for John Lennon's son, Julian, who had gone through a tough time after his parents divorced.

Apple Records was founded by the Beatles members in 1967 and was intended as a creative outlet for the Beatles both as a group and individually as well as other single artists like Mary Hopkin, James Taylor, Badfinger, and Billy Preston. However, by the mid-1970's the roster had become dominated by the former Beatles as solo artists.

Apple's record albums and singles labels displayed a bright green Granny Smith apple on the A-side while the flipside or B-side displayed a cross section of the apple. Originally "Hey Jude" was to be released as the B-side of song "Revolution" but it turned out to be the other way around.
