Elvis Presley's' performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" was a high profile national event, 82% of the television viewing audience watched. He took the time to say that this show is 'probably the greatest honor I have ever had in my life'. Then he went on to sing his 1st song 'Don't Be Cruel'. The TV camera showed him above the waist, sometimes closing in on his face. His gyrating body and dance moves were never fully shown on TV. He was not conservative enough.

At the time of Elvis' appearance on Sullivan, there was true controversy over his bumps and grinds and gyrating hips. In the video footage of Elvis' 1st performance (placed in archives), he is seen in full figure, crooning and dancing to 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'Love Me Tender' and, then later singing 'Hound Dog' and 'Ready Teddy'.

Elvis' actions and body movements out of lens range were causing unexplained screams from the studio audience. After he ended his 1st song, 'Don't Be Cruel', he acknowledged the very vocal (female) segment of the crowd, saying, 'Thank you, ladies'. To finish his first segment in the show, he played the title song to his new movie, 'Love Me Tender', introducing it as 'completely different from anything we've ever done.'

The music and raw, energetic sight of Elvis truly captivated most young people in the TV studio and America. On the Sullivan show, Elvis started what some critics called a "cultural revolution". He was to become an icon; he would change music and entertainment forever.
