What was the first state capital of Indiana?

Corydon is a town in the far southern part of the state of Indiana in the United States. It is in Harrison Township in Harrison County, just north of the Ohio River. It was founded in 1808 when Vincennes was the capital of the Indiana Territory; the capital was moved to Corydon in 1813. The state of Indiana was established in 1816, and Corydon was the capital of the state until Indianapolis took over that role in 1825. The town remains the county seat of Harrison County and had a population of 3,122 at the 2010 census.

People, Vincennes was the Territory Capitol NOT the State Capitol. Corydon was the first State Capitol. There's a difference between territory and state.

Having several nieces and nephews who are life-long residents of Indiana, I was somewhat interested in this question. It waa fortunate that I used the double chance since I tried Evansville before settling on Corydon.

Steve Braccini, Steve, you are absolutely right and everyone else is wrong. I was born in Indiana and am retired here pushing 87. Easy question for me since I learned about Corydon in primary school; however, I have no idea why anyone not a native of Indiana should be expected to know this. Do I know the Capital of any other state if there has been a change? No.

Gary S. Hughes, Corydon is a lovely small town near the KY border! It is home to the Squire Boone cave system. He was Daniel Boone’s brother. The old capital building may still be standing.
