James Maitland Stewart (May 20, 1908 – July 2, 1997), also known as Jimmy Stewart, was an American actor and military officer who is one of the most honored and popular stars in film history.

In October 1940, Stewart was drafted into the United States Army but was rejected. Jimmy was 6'3" tall and 138 lbs, he was too light for his height. To get up to 143 lbs, he sought out the help of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's trainer Don Loomis. Stewart enlisted and was inducted in the Army Air Corp on March 22, 1941, which became the Air Force in 1947. He became the first major American movie star to wear a military uniform in World War II.

On July 23, 1959, Stewart was promoted to brigadier general. During his active duty periods, he remained current as a pilot of Convair B-36 Peacemaker, Boeing B-47 Stratojet and Boeing B-52 Stratofortress intercontinental bombers of the Strategic Air Command.

After 27 years of service, Stewart retired from the Air Force on May 31, 1968.

Stewart received a number of awards during his military service and upon his retirement he was awarded the United States Air Force Distinguished Service Medal.

Along with being an award winning actor he had a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from Princeton University.

He was also known for his enduring marriage to Gloria Hatrick McLean. They married August 8, 1949, through February 16, 1994, when she died. His final words to his family were "I'm going to be with Gloria now!"
