The Lafayette Escadrille was a fighter squadron fighting for France in WWI. It was created in March of 1916. It consisted of 38 American pilots with French officers and ground crews. Raoul Lufbery was the squadrons ace pilot with 16 confirmed kills. The squadron saw its first action on May 13th of 1916 during the Battle of Verdun. It scored its first kill 5 days later and its first casualty in June of that year. In total 265 American volunteers served with the squadron.

The squadron was disbanded in February of 1918 and 12 of its pilots were absorbed into the 103 Aero Squadron of the American Air Corps.
