The TV show stars comedian and actor Gabriel "Gabe" Kaplan. He has the title role and is a wisecracking teacher who has returned to his alma mater. At James Buchanan High School, he is assigned to teach a remedial class of loafers, called 'Sweathogs'. As a former remedial student, and a founding member of the original class of Sweathogs, Mr. Kotter befriends the current group of Sweathogs. He is able to stimulate their potential. He is able to be a good, clever, and personable teacher.
At Buchanan High School, the good and successful students have opportunities to take advanced course work, exams, and extra curricula activities such as sports, journalism, student government, the debate team, and academic teams and clubs.
