On the live two-hour 1986 television special, "The Mystery of Al Capone's Vaults" when the vault in the Lexington Hotel once owned by Al Capone was finally opened, the only things found inside were dirt and several empty bottles, including one TV personality Geraldo Rivera claimed was for moonshine bathtub gin. Consequently, after several more attempts to dig into the vault, Geraldo finally admitted defeat. He voiced his disappointment to all the viewers and apologized for a stunt that failed to deliver on a titillating promise.

Rivera next thanked the excavation team for their efforts. Although the show quickly gathered criticism and became infamous for its disappointing ending, this special program was the most watched syndicated television special for the year of 1986. It had an estimated TV audience of approximately 30 million people. After the show, Rivera was quoted in the media as saying "Seems like we [totally] struck out".

The TV special and its failure did not end Rivera's professional career. It may have helped him. In 1987 he started "Geraldo," a daytime talk show. This show was criticized for its controversial sometimes tasteless topics and for the many scuffles between guests. The show ended in 1998. Today, he hosts the news magazine program, "Geraldo at Large" and appears regularly on the Fox TV News Channel.
