What was the real life Dracula's nickname?

Vlad Dracula, was a noble in the Transylvania area of Romania. His nickname Vlad the Impaler was earned because he preferred to impale his enemies on a pole stuck in the ground. Vlad created a forest of hundreds of men impaled on poles as a warning to his enemies. Although Vlad was a violent ruler he is still considered a hero in Romania for fighting off the Islamic Ottoman empire. Dracula was also responsible for many major building projects including 3 castles.

I always thought Vlad got a bad rap! After all he scared the Ottoman Empire, re: Islamic invaders to stay out of Vlad country thus saving countless lives of his own people! Touch situations require tough decisions!

His “real” name is actually Vlad Tepic, “Dracula” in Romanian means “Son of (the) Dragon” which is taken from the fact that his father used a golden dragon as the heraldic device on his shield and surcoat and was known as “The Dragon” (Dracul). Vlad was born in the medieval town of Sigishoara and the house has been preserved.
