The seventh manned mission to the Moon was named Apollo 13 launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 11th, 1970. The first manned Apollo mission was Apollo 7 with the last designated Apollo 17. Apollo 13 never completed its landing on the Moon due to the damage caused by an exploding oxygen tank which forced the crew to abandon a landing attempt and to instead make repairs before a return to Earth. This mission also became the furthest man had ventured from Planet Earth when it reached a distance of 400,171 km (248,655 miles) above the Earth's surface.

The mission was led by James A. Lovell with John L. Swigert to be the Command Module Pilot and Fred W. Haise assigned to pilot the Lunar Module. The mission became the subject of a Hollywood movie directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris in 1995.
