Evel Knievel was a stuntman, who became famous by jumping motorcycles over obstacles. He was born Robert Craig Knievel Jr in Butte Montana on October 17, 1938. Professionally he went by Evel Knievel which was a takeoff on the word evil. Most consider Evel to be the greatest motorcycle daredevil of all time, and in 1999 he was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

In September of 1974 Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon on a rocket powered motorcycle. The attempt failed when the parachute deployed shortly after takeoff. Knievel had originally wanted to jump the Grand Canyon but he could not get permission for the stunt, so he settled for the Snake River Canyon.

Evil died November 30, 2007 in Clearwater, Florida of pulmonary disease.
