When did Moldova acquire its independence?

Moldova officially the Republic of Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south (by way of the disputed territory of Transnistria). The capital city is Chișinău.

On 27 August 1991, as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Moldavian SSR declared independence and took the name Moldova. The current Constitution of Moldova was adopted in 1994. The strip of the Moldovan territory on the east bank of the Dniester river has been under the de facto control of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990.

Due to a decrease in industrial and agricultural output following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the service sector has grown to dominate Moldova's economy and currently composes over 60% of the nation's GDP. Its economy is the poorest in Europe in per capita terms.

Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. It is a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and aspires to join the European Union.

Moldova and Romania should be one country, they speak the same language and have the same colors in the flag. However, Moldova is too poor and Romania is reluctant to join with such a poor country. Citizens of Molldova however, can apply for Romanian citizenship.

Modova separated from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991. They were not officially recognized as an independent country until March 2, 1992. So the correct answer is 1992.

Rafi Manory, Moldova has a more Russian identity and more Moldovans I've met spoke Russian or Ukrainian as well as Romanian/Moldovan - it's a very poor nation with little going on sadly as well; there's a region called Moldavia (Moldova in Romanian) in the eastern half which used to comprise about half of the modern country of Moldova - that's where I was born

Joe Mangan , sorry - others are adamant that Moldovan is a separate language. I met a Moldovan who was opposed to a union, yet waxed lyrical about a Moldovan who was an inter-war government minister in Romania. It's not simple, and is complicated by the existence of substantial Slavic minorities.
