When did the Bank of England £1 note cease to be legal tender?

The Bank of England £1 note was a banknote of the pound sterling. After the ten shilling note was withdrawn in 1970 it became the smallest denomination note issued by the Bank of England. The one pound note was issued by the Bank of England for the first time in 1797 and continued to be printed until 1984. The note was withdrawn in 1988 in favor of the one pound coin.

Good idea. We've done the same in Canada. The dollar and the 2 dollar notes have been replaced with coins. The Loonie and toonie respectively.

A small number are still printed by Royal Bank of Scotland. I can't remember the last time I saw one though.

Its still legal tender. The only change is that the Bank of England no longer print them. Also until recently the Royal Bank of Scotland still printed £1.00 notes

Same in NZ, I think that's why most people pay with plastic cards. They don't weigh you down like coins.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the UK ( England primarily) and when they ceased printing the one pound note you felt the difference in your pockets . Ergonomically uncomfortable having a lot of coins in your front pockets ,as opposed to a few notes in your back pocket wallet ...
