When did the British children's television programme 'Blue Peter' first air?

Blue Peter is a British children's television programme, currently shown live on the CBBC television channel. A significant part of British culture, it first aired in 1958 and is the longest-running children's TV show in the world. Although the show has a nautical title and theme, it is a magazine/entertainment show containing viewer and presenter challenges, as well as the famous arts and crafts "makes".

During its history there have been many presenters, currently Lindsey Russell and Radzi Chinyanganya. The show is produced mainly in a television studio, but there is also a garden, often referred to as the Blue Peter Garden, used during the summer and for outdoor activities. The programme has always featured a number of pets; currently a tortoise called Shelly makes an appearance from time to time and also a dog named Iggy who has now gone on to being a guide dog.

Certainly someone from the UK has better odds of knowing this, but isn’t that the nature of trivia? As a sports fan in the USA, I have the advantage on “football” and baseball questions. Let’s quit griping about topics outside our comfort zone!

It would have been good to mention that over the years the programme has raised millions of pounds for various charities, has built schools and opened up water wells in poorer countries. Money raised has also provided Life boats in various locations around the British & Irish Coast. Any viewer providing and item or article for the show to use receives a 'Blue Peter Badge' while those who do exceptional deeds will receive a Gold Blue Peter Badge. Much sort after.

What a fantastic children's programme! As a child growing up in the sixties it was an unmissable watch on Mondays and Thursdays. Television seemed so innocent in those days...how times have changed.
