The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, having a southern terminus in Virginia Beach, VA and reaching the southern tip of the Delmarva peninsula, and which initially opened on April 15,1964, substantially decreased travel distance and time for traffic from points south of VA to the Mid-Atlantic regions and the northeast. This was of particular importance to commercial shipping interests considering the savings in time and expense of getting goods to market. The drive, over and under more than seventeen miles of the Chesapeake Bay, is comprised of multiple segments consisting of both above-water roadways and two tunnels which are laid beneath the two shipping channels in the bay.
