George (b. 9/26/31), Willie (b. 3/3/38), Lester (b. 4/13/40), and Joe (b. 8/2/42) Chambers started singing in their Baptist Church choir in Carthage, Mississippi. George was drafted into the US Army in 1952, breaking up the group. The brothers re-formed the band later in the decade, and started playing not only gospel, soul, and blues, but folk rock. In the late ‘60’s, to give the band a more rock-and-roll/psychedelic sound, they recruited drummer Brian Keenan.

“Time Has Come Today” achieved that goal and turned out to be the band’s biggest hit. The 11minute-long masterpiece of rock/soul/blues/psychedelia was written by Willie and Joe Chambers, and featured echoing vocals and Keenan’s percussion work. It stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for five weeks in late September and early October of 1968, peaking at number 11.

In 1972, because of dishonest managers and promoters, the band dissolved and the five Chambers Brothers members pursued other work. The band re-formed in 1974. New members came and went, and the band was still playing in 2017. Its music, particularly “Time Has Come Today” has been used in films and television advertisements, keeping the Chambers Brothers in the public eye.
