Men's curling was included as a sport in the Olympic program in 1924 at the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix. It was later dropped, and then re-introduced as a demonstration sport in 1932 in Lake Placid. After a lengthy absence in 1988 and 1992, it was once again seen in the Olympics. The sport was not recognized as a medal sport until the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. The United States won its first Olympic medal in curling at the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy.

Curling was included in the program of the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1924 because executives of the International Olympic Committee said, "the object of the game was to determine the relative skill of the players, recognize the spirit of a game which demands good sportsmanship, kind feeling, and honorable conduct.” The results of the 1924 competition were not considered official by the International Olympic Committee until 2006.
